The Government of Australia banned asbestos in 2003. Unfortunately, asbestos had already been used as a construction material from the 50’s onwards without the knowledge of the health risks it poses. While the fences were the first asbestos structures to be replaced, so durable is the dangerous material that many garages constructed from it are still standing today.

What is the danger associated with asbestos?

In the form it is used for construction, usually sheets or boards, asbestos is not generally harmful to a person’s health. If it is left alone, it should not cause a problem. However, if it is disturbed and especially if it is broken or cut in some way, it then becomes one of the most serious residential house hazards of our time. These fibres, if breathed into the lungs will stay lodged in the lungs forever. In the worst case, this could cause a fatal case of mesothelioma (asbestos-related lung cancer). However, there are many less serious health issues caused by asbestos inhalation as well.
