Why was asbestos used?

In 2003, the Government of Australia officially banned asbestos as a construction material for new builds, renovations and repairs. However, from the 50’s through to the 80’s asbestos was a popular, strong and inexpensive construction material that was used frequently in places such as ceilings, roof linings, walls, the eaves of the roof, and even flooring.

Asbestos is constructed of billions of small, short fibres. These fibres, once in the air, can be breathed in. They then stick in the lungs, where they become a real health hazard, potentially lethal in many cases.

The asbestos fibres enter the lungs where they become embedded and because the fibres are so durable, they can be trapped in the lungs for many decades where they eventually cause debilitating diseases which more often than not, lead to a terrible death.
